Cotton Corduroy Fabric

Corduroy is a durable woven cotton fabric recognised by its distinctive vertical ribs, known as wales. Its textured surface adds depth and warmth to garments while maintaining the breathability and comfort of natural fibre.

Depending on the wale size and weight, corduroy material can suit everything from lightweight dressmaking to more structured sewing projects. The fabric’s subtle sheen and soft handle make it a practical yet characterful choice for everyday clothing and seasonal sewing.

Fine 21-wale corduroy has a softer handle and lighter feel, making it suitable for dresses, shirts, children’s clothing and relaxed garments. The narrower ribs create a subtle texture while maintaining flexibility and comfort.

Classic 11-wale corduroy has a more defined rib and structured drape. It is often chosen for trousers, skirts, jackets, pinafores and structured pieces where durability and shape are important.

Corduroy has a visible nap, meaning the fabric surface reflects light differently depending on direction. When cutting, all pattern pieces should be placed in the same direction to ensure consistent colour and texture.

Cotton corduroy presses well and is durable for everyday wear. For best results, use a sharp needle and finish raw edges to minimise fraying.
